Embraer has officially delivered the first five A-29N Super Tucano aircraft to the Portuguese Air Force (PRT AF), making Portugal the world’s first operator of the NATO-configured A-29N variant. The delivery is part of a 12-aircraft acquisition and represents a major milestone in Portugal’s air power modernization efforts.

The handover ceremony took place at OGMA’s facilities and was attended by government officials, Portuguese Air Force leadership, and Embraer executives. Notably, the delivery occurred just one year and one day after contract signing, underscoring Embraer’s ability to rapidly meet customer operational requirements.

Portuguese Minister of Defense Nuno Melo emphasized that the A-29N not only introduces a proven air attack capability for Portugal’s deployed national forces, but also addresses emerging threat scenarios, particularly in counter-UAS missions, highlighting the flexibility of the aircraft selected by the Air Force.

葡萄牙空軍參謀長若昂・卡塔索・阿爾維斯上將（Gen. João Cartaxo Alves）表示，A-29N 的正式服役象徵空軍現代化再向前邁進一步。除汰換服役近 40 年的訓練機型外，也強化 近接空中支援（CAS） 與聯合作戰能力，確保地面部隊具備武裝空中掩護，同時讓葡萄牙在北約盟國中取得戰略優勢。

Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force, General João Cartaxo Alves, stated that the formal delivery marks a decisive step in Air Force modernization. Beyond replacing pilot training aircraft that have been in service for nearly four decades, the A-29N strengthens close air support (CAS) and joint operational capabilities, ensuring armed protection of ground forces and providing Portugal with a strategic NATO advantage.

During the ceremony, Embraer and the Portuguese State signed a Letter of Interest (LOI) to assess the establishment of an A-29N final assembly line in Portugal. Aircraft produced there could meet potential demand from other European nations through government-to-government agreements, strengthening both Portugal’s and Europe’s defense industrial base.
