The Calligraphy Immortal Sect Grandmaster Liu Chien Presents Small Seal Script Dao De Jing “A Mighty Tree Grows from a Tiny Sprout” to Legislator Lo Chih-chiang

「合抱之木,生於毫末;

九層之臺,起於累土;

【English Translation】

Grandmaster Liu Chien, founder of the Chinese Calligraphy Immortal Sect, inscribed in classical Small Seal Script the renowned passage from Chapter 64 of the Dao De Jing:

“A mighty tree grows from a tiny sprout;

A nine-storied terrace begins from a heap of earth;

A journey of a thousand miles starts beneath one’s feet.”

and presented it to Legislator Lo Chih-chiang.

This timeless verse by Laozi teaches that all greatness arises from humble beginnings,

and that integrity, perseverance, and moral grounding form the foundation of every enduring achievement.

Legislator Lo is widely admired for his integrity, courage, intellect, and compassion.

He speaks truth without fear, stands firm in principle, and balances wisdom with humility.

In his public life, he embodies the Confucian virtue of rectitude—

acting not for self-gain, but for the welfare of the people and the preservation of justice.

Through this calligraphic gift, Grandmaster Liu Chien honors his noble character,

wishing him to continue growing—

rooted in truth, guided by virtue, and devoted to the light of moral governance.

English:

This work embodies the eternal truth that greatness begins with the smallest step,

and the Way (Dao) is realized through sincerity and perseverance.

Each stroke flows with the balance of heaven and earth,

mirroring Legislator Lo’s calm strength and moral clarity.

It reminds us that the Way has no fixed form—

it begins in humility and ends in service.

The true worth of leadership lies not in position, but in virtue.

By cultivating oneself, one cultivates others;

by rectifying the heart, one rectifies the nation.

Every noble endeavor is born from a single act of sincerity and a steadfast heart.
