L3Harris has confirmed that its ALQ-254(V)1 electronic warfare system, known as “Viper Shield,” recently completed two-ship formation tactical testing aboard two F-16 fighter aircraft, demonstrating its threat detection, mission coordination, and electronic protection capabilities. At the same time, L3Harris is expanding its facilities and equipment to ensure that the 233 systems already ordered can be produced and delivered according to schedule.
Simulated Multi-Aircraft Operations Validate Real-Time Threat Detection
According to The Defense Post, the test involved a single-seat F-16C and a two-seat F-16D, both configured to the Block 70 standard and each equipped with Viper Shield. Conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the airborne testing simulated operational scenarios involving multiple aircraft performing different missions. The evaluation focused on the system’s ability to detect and identify enemy radars and conduct electromagnetic-spectrum jamming, while coordinated threat detection using the same system also verified that Viper Shield could operate effectively without interfering with the radar or avionics systems of friendly aircraft.
Production Expansion to Accelerate Delivery of 233 Systems
Barnes, a program executive at L3Harris, said the testing demonstrated Viper Shield’s strong threat detection and real-time response capabilities, enabling F-16 Block 70 aircraft to address potential threats in real-world combat environments. The company will continue integration testing while expanding production equipment and capacity, with the goal of accelerating delivery of the 233 systems ordered by eight customers worldwide and bringing the capability into operational service more quickly.
COTS Technology Supports Integration Across New and Existing F-16 Fleets
L3Harris said Viper Shield uses mature commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology and can be installed internally on new F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft or integrated into an external pod for use by existing F-16 fleets, providing digital electronic protection capabilities. The Defense Post reported that Viper Shield passed a critical U.S. Air Force review in November 2025 and was approved to enter the Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) phase. Following the completion of further testing, the system could move toward expanded production to meet potential future customer demand.
