750 kg Rover Exceeds Expectations with Four-Wheel Drive, Steering and Hyper-Deformable Wheels
MONA LUNA
Weighing 750 kg (expandable to 1,000 kg), MONA LUNA is designed for lunar surface exploration and long-term mobility technology testing. Its four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and passive-damping suspension enabled it to climb slopes of up to 33 degrees, exceeding expectations. Key findings include:
-
Exceptional contact area of the hyper-deformable wheels on both loose and compact terrain
-
Traction surpassing forecasts
-
Ability to cross large rocky obstacles with ease
-
Dynamic stability on slopes meeting programme requirements
-
Strong performance from onboard electronic systems
These results are consistent with extensive NASA tests conducted between 2022 and 2025.
Shared Technologies with FLIP Rover Ahead of Lunar Deployment Next Summer
MONA LUNA already incorporates technologies that will be deployed on the Moon next summer aboard another rover, FLIP. Developed by Venturi Astrolab, FLIP will share hyper-deformable wheels, batteries, heating systems, temperature sensors and Venturi’s innovative rover-lander egress mechanism. Both rovers also share bodywork designed by Sacha Lakic.
Venturi Space to Open 10,000 m² Production Facility in Toulouse by 2028
Venturi Space will break ground next spring on a new 10,000 m² flagship facility in Toulouse, adjacent to CNES. Beginning operations in early 2028, the site will host 150 engineers dedicated to designing and manufacturing MONA LUNA, working closely with Swiss and Monegasque teams on wheels, heating systems, cryogenic materials, egress mechanisms and high-performance batteries.

Daniel Neuenschwander:
Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA Director of Human and Robotic Exploration:
“I was truly impressed by how MONA LUNA handled the challenging LUNA terrain. Watching its wheels deform and adapt to regolith, slopes and rocks was remarkable. If selected for an ESA mission, it would be a tremendous opportunity for Europe.”
Venturi Space 總裁 Gildo Pastor:
Gildo Pastor, President of Venturi Space:
“Seeing MONA LUNA operate at the legendary LUNA site is a profound source of pride. This rover demonstrates the capabilities of our wheels, suspension and electronics. We know this is only the first 1% of the journey that we hope will take us to the Moon.”
Dr. Antonio Delfino:
Dr. Antonio Delfino, Director of Space Affairs, Venturi Space:
“These driving tests were primarily dedicated to locomotion. We wanted to understand MONA LUNA’s behavior on loose soil, slopes and major obstacles. The results exceed expectations. The wheels’ ability to ‘float’ on the regolith is essential to avoid becoming bogged down.”
