Ukraine and Sweden have signed a letter of intent for the export of up to 150 Saab Gripen E fighter jets, marking a major milestone in Kyiv’s efforts to modernize its air force with Western fourth-generation aircraft.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson confirmed Ukraine’s request for between 100 and 150 aircraft, while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said initial deliveries could begin within three years, with full production potentially taking a decade or longer.

The Gripen E, Saab’s most advanced variant, is equipped with cutting-edge electronic warfare systems and designed to operate from short or improvised runways — a capability that would allow Ukrainian pilots to maintain combat operations despite missile threats and airfield strikes.
