Reviving and Safeguarding Matsunese in the Home
Taoyuan is home to the largest Matsu immigrant community in Taiwan, often called the second hometown of Matsunese. To help preserve this heritage, the Taoyuan City Cultural Affairs Bureau invited Matsu families to the Bade Lugang Civic Center for a parent-child co-learning camp, themed “I Am Matsunese, Living in Taoyuan.” The program aims to pass on the unique language and traditions of the Matsu community.
Sixteen families took part, exploring their ancestral culture and language together. The program introduced the Matsu dialect—part of the Eastern Min language group, along with traditional foods, folk songs, and handmade lanterns, and included visits to Longshan Temple and Da Nan Market to connect with Matsu heritage.
This year, participants also showcased their learning through video projects, presenting their hometown culture and traditions in their own voices.
