Turkey Accelerates Development of Fifth-Generation ‘KAAN’ Fighter Jet, Aiming for 2028 Delivery
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) is intensifying efforts to develop its indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet, the “KAAN,” with the goal of delivering the first production aircraft to the Turkish Air Force by the end of 2028.
At the 2025 Teknofest aerospace and technology festival, TUSAŞ CEO Mustafa Demiroğlu announced that the second and third prototypes are currently under assembly. A total of four prototypes are planned: three for flight testing and one for ground testing.
The first prototype completed its maiden flight in February 2024 and successfully activated its afterburner. The third test flight is anticipated between August and October 2025. The second prototype will incorporate design improvements based on insights from the first, including modifications to the air inlets and internal structural enhancements to optimize flight performance and stability.
Currently, the KAAN jet is powered by General Electric’s F110 turbofan engine. Plans are in place to replace this with a domestically developed engine by 2032, aiming for complete nationalization of the aircraft’s components.
The KAAN project is intended to replace Turkey’s existing fleet of F-4E and F-16 fighter jets. Key features include low radar cross-section design, internal weapons bays, supercruise capability, and an indigenous avionics suite, marking a significant advancement in Turkey’s aerospace capabilities.
