‘Look Look’ micro library – Helping children to read

文字-A A +A

Serving the study needs of rural children, ‘Look-Look Volunteer Group’ was formed by Lin Zhao-xian (林兆現), Ji Xin (紀欣), Huang Zi-qi (黃子綺), Xu Ting-yu (許庭瑜), Hong Yen-ru (洪嬿如), and Wu Zhi-yi (吳芷宜), all students from National Chang-Hua Senior School of Commerce. The students became aware that due to changes in Taiwanese industry, rural communities are now unable to provide sufficient job opportunities, and many parents are forced to spend a lot of time working away from home. As a direct result of this, with nothing else to do, children tend to kill time finding amusement on the streets and playing around village temples.

In an attempt to address the situation, members of ‘Look-Look Volunteer Group’ collected second-hand children’s books and established ‘Friends of the Corner Bookshelf’ and ‘Micro Libraries’ in various community service centers. The group’s hard work has not only motivated residents and children from rural communities to jointly build reading resources, but a combination of storytelling, drama, accompanying children with reading, and calling for the participation of parents has also helped to build parent-child relationships.

On the eve of graduation this year, group members were engaged in on-going consultations with communities regarding the future development of ‘Friends of the Corner Bookshelf’ - for which they have put forward proposals for the establishment of community reading classes. However, with regard to the actual difficulties of implementing the project and problems raising sufficient volunteer numbers, a solution has yet to be found.

With the hope of maximizing the use of such resources, Look-Look Volunteer Group reorganized the second-hand books collected for ‘Friends of the Corner Bookshelf’ and distributed them to elementary schools in rural areas, improving the reading resources at local schools.
