GKN Aerospace Expands Global AM Footprint with New Investment in Norway

GKN Aerospace has announced an investment to expand advanced additive manufacturing capabilities at its engines centre of excellence in Kongsberg, Norway. The initiative is supported by a NOK 12 million (nearly £1 million) co-investment from Norwegian Catapult Manufacturing Technology in Kongsberg and The Industrial Growth Company (SIVA), reinforcing Norway’s position in sustainable industrial innovation.

Additive Manufacturing Enables Sustainability, Efficiency and Industrial Transformation

Additive manufacturing reduces material waste, shortens supply chains, and lowers environmental impact. Through this collaboration, Norwegian Catapult and GKN Aerospace aim to accelerate industrial adoption of AM and establish a foundation for advanced, sustainable additive manufacturing in Norway.

The agreement marks the next step in GKN Aerospace’s ongoing global expansion of additive manufacturing capabilities, following recent investments in Sweden and the United States. Partnering with Norwegian Catapult strengthens GKN’s strategy to expand capacity, accelerate innovation and bring advanced AM technologies closer to customers, while supporting Norway’s ambitions in sustainable industrial development.

Executive Remarks: AM Is Central to the Future of Aerospace

“Additive manufacturing is a cornerstone of our vision for the future of aerospace,” said Sébastien Aknouche, Senior Vice President, Material Solutions, GKN Aerospace. “This partnership enables us to fully industrialise additive technology and bring sustainable, high-performance solutions closer to our customers.”

“Together with GKN Aerospace, we are building a platform for future-oriented manufacturing in Norway,” said Ole B. Hoen. “By co-investing in this initiative, we ensure that the unique infrastructure and competence GKN Aerospace is establishing in Kongsberg becomes available to the broader Norwegian industry.”

Strategic Impact: Strengthening Kongsberg as a Global Centre of Excellence

The agreement supports GKN Aerospace’s long-term strategy to expand global additive manufacturing capabilities, including investments in machinery, hardware and industrial infrastructure. Strengthening the Kongsberg centre of excellence enhances the company’s ability to meet rising demand from engine OEMs and reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability in next-generation engine manufacturing.
