US Official Says Some Taiwan Arms Sales Delayed for Middle East Operations
Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao stated during a congressional hearing that some US arms sales procedures to Taiwan have been paused to ensure sufficient munitions for operations related to Iran.
Cao noted that the US military is currently conducting an operation called “Epic Fury,” requiring the Pentagon to prioritize its own munitions inventory and readiness requirements.
He said, “Right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for the mission.”
Taiwan Presidential Office Says No Notice of Arms Sale Changes
Responding to the remarks, Taiwan Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo said Taipei has not received any formal indication that Washington plans to alter the arms sales package.
Reports noted that attention is focused on the approximately $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, particularly amid growing tensions in US-China relations and Indo-Pacific security concerns.
Trump Administration’s Taiwan Policy Under Scrutiny
US President Donald Trump has not explicitly committed to advancing the arms sale, raising concerns among some observers about the future level of American support for Taiwan.
Prior to his China visit, Trump reportedly said he would discuss Taiwan arms sales with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a move viewed as a departure from Washington’s previous policy of not consulting Beijing on such matters.
However, after the trip, Trump emphasized that he made no commitments to Xi regarding Taiwan and said the US would decide on the arms sales “over the next fairly short period of time.”
China Reiterates Opposition to Taiwan Arms Sales
China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated Beijing’s firm opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan and urged Washington to halt related military cooperation.
Beijing has steadily increased military pressure on Taiwan in recent years and has repeatedly stated it does not rule out the use of force for unification.
Analysts: US Munitions Stockpile Pressure Becoming More Visible
Military analysts say the remarks reflect growing pressure on US munitions production and stockpiles amid simultaneous commitments in the Middle East, Indo-Pacific, and Europe.
The ongoing war in Ukraine, Red Sea tensions, and the Iran situation have significantly consumed precision-guided munitions, increasing US focus on replenishment rates for missiles and air defense systems.
Analysts believe that even if some sales processes are delayed, Washington’s broader military cooperation with Taiwan and Indo-Pacific strategy are unlikely to fundamentally change in the near term.
