First Crewed Lunar Flyby in Decades Marks Key Step Toward Moon Return
NASA’s Artemis II mission lifted off at 7:35 p.m. EDT on the 1st (7:35 a.m. Taiwan time on the 2nd), launching a 10-day crewed lunar flyby. This marks humanity’s first return to lunar orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, representing a major milestone in the effort to return to the Moon.
SLS and Orion Carry Four Astronauts on 10-Day Lunar Mission
The mission utilizes SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, launching from Launch Complex 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After separating from its solid rocket boosters and core stage, the spacecraft entered space approximately eight minutes after liftoff.
The Orion spacecraft then used its Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) to perform orbital adjustments, executing burns at perigee and deploying four solar arrays. Following system checks, it is set to proceed on its trajectory toward the Moon.
International Crew to Fly Past Lunar Far Side and Gather Key Data
According to SpaceNews, the mission crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
During the mission, Orion is expected to fly past the far side of the Moon on day six, capturing imagery and conducting observations to support future crewed landing missions. It will then use a gravity assist maneuver to return to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off California, where it will be recovered by the U.S. Navy.
Record-Breaking Distance Sets Stage for 2028 Lunar Landing
If successful, the crew will travel to a distance of approximately 400,000 kilometers from Earth, potentially setting a new record for the farthest human spaceflight since Apollo 13. The total mission distance will reach about 685,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers), laying the groundwork for future missions.
Looking ahead, Artemis III is planned for 2027 to conduct lunar lander docking tests, followed by Artemis IV in 2028, which aims to achieve a crewed lunar landing. The success of Artemis II will serve as a critical technological foundation for humanity’s return to the Moon.
