Netherlands considers joint production of Raytheon’s AMRAAM missile to boost European defense capacity

The Netherlands is exploring the possibility of locally producing Raytheon’s AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) after the U.S. approved a feasibility study expected to begin in 2026.

The Dutch Ministry of Defence said the study will assess how local industry can contribute to production, assembly, and maintenance of the AMRAAM, marking the first step toward joint missile manufacturing with a European NATO partner.

“This cooperation will help accelerate AMRAAM production and strengthen NATO’s defense capacity, particularly for supporting Ukraine,” the Dutch MoD stated.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force already operates AMRAAM missiles on its F-35 fighter jets and plans to integrate them into the upcoming NASAMS air-defense system.

While the Netherlands currently lacks a tactical missile production line, aerospace firms like GKN Aerospace and Thales Nederland could become part of the future supply chain.

Belgium has expressed similar interest, reflecting a wider European shift toward regional defense autonomy and trans-Atlantic cooperation.

In September, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of 232 AIM-120C-8 missiles worth an estimated $570 million to the Netherlands. The missiles were reportedly used in September to shoot down Russian drones entering Polish airspace — a vivid reminder of their real-world importance.

🔍 Three Key Observations

1️⃣ Europe moves toward defense localization – The Netherlands’ initiative marks NATO’s first AMRAAM co-production effort in Europe, reflecting a strategic move to reduce dependency on U.S. manufacturing.

2️⃣ War drives production acceleration – Sustaining Ukraine’s defense needs has spurred regional manufacturing, offering lessons for Taiwan’s supply-chain resilience strategy.

3️⃣ Joint manufacturing becomes a new norm – The project may become a model for future NATO co-production programs, signaling the globalization of defense industrial cooperation.
