U.S. Defense Secretary Orders Reduction of Senior Military Leaders to Streamline Command Structure

On May 5, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a significant reduction in the number of senior military leaders. The plan includes at least a 20% cut in active-duty four-star generals and admirals, as well as a similar reduction in National Guard general officers. Additionally, there will be a 10% overall reduction across all general and flag officer ranks.

Hegseth stated that the objective is to eliminate redundant command structures and enhance strategic readiness and operational effectiveness.
