Korea-U.S. defense alliance launches STOL Gray Eagle drone project to dominate global UAV market
South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace and U.S. drone giant General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) have announced a strategic partnership to develop a Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) variant of the MQ-1C Gray Eagle. The project is expected to yield its first prototype flight by 2027.
The collaboration goes beyond R&D—it aims to establish domestic production in Korea. Hanwha estimates an initial investment of ₩750 billion (approx. NT$156.4 billion) for local manufacturing, with GA-ASI projecting global demand for over 600 units in the next decade, worth up to ₩15 trillion (NT$3,129 billion) in exports.
The STOL Gray Eagle is designed for short-runway and deck-based operations, with a payload capacity of 1.6 tons, enabling roles from strike missions to ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) and electronic warfare. A successful launch and recovery trial from the ROK Navy’s Dokdo-class LPH last November laid the groundwork for this ambitious partnership.
Hanwha Aerospace plans to establish a full-scale national drone ecosystem, integrating local suppliers and workforce to produce, maintain, and potentially export the drone independently. This effort aligns with South Korea’s broader ambition to become a UAV powerhouse in Asia.
This STOL Gray Eagle initiative is more than just a technological upgrade—it underscores the deepening strategic defense ties between South Korea and the United States, and sets a new benchmark for collaborative drone warfare development.
