Boeing and the Royal Australian Air Force have achieved a historic milestone by successfully executing an autonomous air-to-air weapons engagement from an MQ-28 Ghost Bat Collaborative Combat Aircraft, destroying a fighter-class target and demonstrating full end-to-end autonomous combat capability.

The operation teamed an MQ-28 Ghost Bat with an RAAF E-7A Wedgetail and an F/A-18F Super Hornet. Launching from separate locations, the three platforms collaborated in real time, with MQ-28 ultimately executing an autonomous AIM-120 AMRAAM engagement to destroy the target.

“This exercise demonstrates the maturity of Boeing’s mission autonomy solution, built on open standards compatible with 4th, 5th and 6th generation aircraft,” said Colin Miller. “Our team integrated, tested and employed the weapon in a live scenario in under eight months — a true example of speed-to-capability.”
