鰻魚養殖業一直都是創造台灣漁業經濟奇蹟的行業，在農曆11月到隔年農曆二月，吹起西南氣流季風前，在沿海地區可以看見許多捕撈鰻魚苗的漁民，季節性的捕鰻魚苗，讓漁民增加許多收入。補鰻魚苗有許多種方式，其中在雲林的台西沿海常見定置型網，漁民依着潮汐漲落出海作業，過程要承受風浪以及東北季風襲擊。
