Prototype Displayed During FLEETEX 250 Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary
Boeing has announced that the MQ-25A Stingray carrier-based unmanned aerial refueling aircraft prototype recently appeared aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) during Fleet Exercise 250 (FLEETEX 250), commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States while providing a glimpse of the U.S. Navy's future carrier air wing composition.
According to The War Zone, the prototype aircraft—designated "T1" and carrying a special blue "250" anniversary marking—was transported aboard the aircraft carrier and displayed alongside four F/A-18E Super Hornets and two C-2A Greyhound carrier onboard delivery aircraft, illustrating the Navy's vision of a future air wing integrating both crewed and uncrewed aircraft.

Key Step Toward Future Crewed-Uncrewed Carrier Operations
Boeing said the display highlights not only the company's long-standing contribution to U.S. naval aviation but also the future operational concept of carrier air wings incorporating unmanned systems.
The MQ-25A is set to become the world's first operational carrier-based unmanned aerial refueling aircraft. Its primary mission will be to provide organic aerial refueling for carrier-based fighters such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, allowing those aircraft to shift from buddy-tanking duties back to strike, air superiority, and other combat missions while significantly expanding the combat reach of carrier strike groups.
持續完成各項驗證 預計明年起逐步部署
報導指出,MQ-25A原型機自2019年起持續投入各項飛行及地面測試,並曾於2021年12月登上**「布希號」(USS George H.W. Bush,CVN 77)**航空母艦進行甲板操作驗證。
此外,首架預量產型(Engineering and Manufacturing Development,EMD)MQ-25A已於今年4月完成首次飛行,目前正持續進行飛行性能、系統整合及航艦運用相關測試。
後續仍須完成包括:
- 航艦彈射起飛與攔阻降落驗證
- 與航艦飛行管制系統整合
- 艦載運作流程驗證
- 後勤維保與任務系統測試
待完成各項測試後,MQ-25A可望自明年起逐步部署至美國海軍航空母艦。
Operational Testing Continues Ahead of Fleet Introduction
The MQ-25A prototype has participated in extensive flight and ground testing since 2019 and previously conducted deck handling evaluations aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) in December 2021.
Meanwhile, the first engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight in April, marking another major milestone for the program.
Before entering operational service, the aircraft must complete additional testing, including:
- Catapult launch and arrested landing qualifications
- Integration with carrier command-and-control systems
- Flight deck handling procedures
- Maintenance and logistics validation
The U.S. Navy expects the MQ-25A to begin entering operational service next year following completion of these evaluations.

Expanding Carrier Strike Range Against Future A2/AD Threats
Once fielded, the MQ-25A will initially focus on aerial refueling missions, significantly extending the operational range of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and eventually F-35C Lightning II fighters.
Defense analysts note that the Stingray will play an important role in enabling U.S. carrier strike groups to operate more effectively against increasingly sophisticated anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) environments, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
The aircraft also represents an important step toward the Navy's long-term vision of integrating unmanned aircraft into future carrier air wings under broader crewed-uncrewed teaming (MUM-T) concepts, paving the way for a new generation of carrier-based autonomous systems.
