Patrolling for Turtles, Protecting Farmland: Yong’an’s Win-Win Conservation

In Yong’an, Shiding District, New Taipei, the yellow-margined box turtle and the yellow pond turtle are rare, protected species in Taiwan that now face extinction. Due to habitat destruction and poaching, their numbers have continued to decline. Facing this ecological crisis, local residents decided to take action to protect the community’s natural environment.
In 2020, village chief Hsiao Min-ling organized the Yong’an Turtle Patrol. Wearing rubber boots and carrying bamboo staffs, residents began patrolling and keeping records. Through close observation and dedication, they learned how best to protect these endangered turtles.
After establishing the patrol system, residents introduced technological monitoring and built partnerships with scholars and public agencies— turning turtle protection into a community-wide effort and an everyday part of life in Yong’an.
