美軍高層因此推動新型升級案「M1E3」，計畫強化頂部裝甲、加裝電子反制設備、雷射眩目器，以及模組化的主動防護系統，期盼能抵禦自殺式無人機的連環打擊。
In response, the U.S. Army is pursuing a major upgrade dubbed “M1E3” — enhancing top armor, integrating electronic countermeasures, laser dazzlers, and modular active protection systems to combat suicide drones.

This is more than a tank refresh — it's part of a broader modernization push. The upcoming XM30 Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV), being developed by Rheinmetall and GDLS, is expected to feature 50mm cannons and precision missiles.

根據2023年一份針對第5代戰鬥車輛的美軍評估報告指出，即使到了2040年，主戰坦克仍將是戰場上不可或缺的存在。
A 2023 U.S. Army report assessing fifth-generation combat vehicles emphasized that even in 2040, main battle tanks will remain indispensable.

然而在該報告中，美國陸軍科學委員會曾建議研發全新一代坦克，但軍方內部「次世代戰鬥車輛跨功能團隊」則主張延壽改良M1車系，雙方看法存在分歧。
While the Army Science Board recommended developing a brand-new tank, the Next-Generation Combat Vehicle Cross Functional Team favored upgrading the M1 platform, revealing internal disagreement.
