Taiwan’s Marine Corps Set to Adopt Indigenous "Jing Feng" UAV After Naval Tests

The "Jing Feng" attack drone, developed by Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), has successfully passed operational testing by the Navy and is now slated for procurement under the military’s 2026 fiscal budget.

Originally known as the “Loitering Munition Type-1,” the UAV has been renamed “Jing Feng” (meaning Valiant Wasp), and is purpose-built for precision strikes and rapid deployment on the battlefield.

Military insiders indicate that the Marine Corps is undergoing a sweeping organizational overhaul. The 66th Marine Brigade is testing new force structures: its tank battalion is being converted into a drone battalion, while artillery units are being reorganized into integrated firepower battalions.

Headquarters companies, including air defense platoons, are also undergoing adjustments to accommodate the integration of new unmanned combat systems.

The Jing Feng features a “one drone, one launcher” design. Each unit is equipped with EO/IR sensors, has an 8-kilometer operational range, and can loiter for 15 minutes post-launch—ideal for both surveillance and strike missions.

Each soldier can carry two of these drones for rapid field deployment, providing frontline units with flexible, high-mobility strike capabilities.

While exact procurement numbers and budget totals remain undisclosed, the replacement and rollout are expected to take place over the next two to three years.

Earlier this year, NCSIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Taiwan University, YunTech, and National Formosa University to advance drone development through academic partnerships.

The event also showcased several indigenous reconnaissance and attack drones, such as the “Red Sparrow III,” highlighting Taiwan’s expanding capabilities in homegrown UAV technology.
