US Marines Deploy MADIS System Overseas for the First Time, Enhancing Joint Air Defense with the Philippines

During the 2025 “Balikatan” US-Philippines joint military exercise, the US Marine Corps deployed the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) overseas for the first time to enhance joint air defense capabilities. The exercise, held from April 21 to May 9 in the Philippines, involves 14,000 personnel, including 9,000 US and 5,000 Philippine troops. It simulates full-scale combat scenarios, covering maritime defense and island protection, particularly focusing on contested areas near Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Operated by the 3d Littoral Anti-Air Battalion’s ground-based air defense battery, the MADIS system specializes in detecting and destroying drones. Mounted on tactical vehicles, it is equipped with radar, jammers, Stinger missiles, and a 30mm cannon, allowing operators to engage aerial threats without leaving the vehicle. This deployment marks the system’s second live-fire test following its initial exercise in Hawaii in January and its first deployment outside the continental United States.

US and Philippine Marines will conduct integrated air and missile defense exercises, demonstrating the coordination between MADIS and the Philippines’ own counter-drone systems. This deployment strengthens US-Philippine military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and enhances their ability to counter emerging threats such as drones.

Three Key Points:

  1. First Overseas Deployment of MADIS Enhances Joint Air Defense
The US Marine Corps deployed the MADIS system overseas for the first time, conducting joint counter-drone exercises with the Philippine military to strengthen combined air defense capabilities.
  2. MADIS System’s High Automation Improves Operational Efficiency
Mounted on tactical vehicles, the MADIS system features radar, jammers, Stinger missiles, and a 30mm cannon, enabling operators to automatically detect and neutralize aerial threats without dismounting, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
  3. Strengthening US-Philippine Military Cooperation to Address Indo-Pacific Security Challenges
The exercise showcases US-Philippine collaboration in air defense, bolstering their capacity to address security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
