UK and US Launch Joint Airstrike on Yemen’s Houthi Rebels, Marking UK’s First Participation in ‘Operation Rough Rider’

On April 30, 2025, the UK Royal Air Force, in cooperation with the United States, conducted an airstrike against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, marking the UK’s first participation in the US-led “Operation Rough Rider.” The target was a drone manufacturing facility located approximately 25 kilometers south of Sanaa, believed to be used by the Houthis to produce drones for attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey stated that the action was in response to the Houthis’ persistent threats to maritime navigation. Since the Houthis intensified their attacks on Red Sea shipping, the volume of shipping in the area has decreased by 55%, significantly impacting the global economy.

The airstrike was conducted at night to minimize civilian casualties. The UK Ministry of Defense has not yet released information on the damage assessment or casualties resulting from the operation.

Previously, on April 18, a US airstrike on the Ras Isa fuel port resulted in at least 74 deaths and 171 injuries, drawing international attention and criticism of US military actions.
