Israel Pursues ‘World’s First’ Laser Weapon Capability in Space
Israel is pursuing the development of a space-based laser weapon capable of operating from orbit, aiming to become the first country to field such a capability.
Defense minister says Israel aims to lead the world
Katz said the technology would significantly strengthen Israel’s deterrence, even against adversaries with substantial military resources.
He noted that recruiting top scientific and engineering talent has become one of the government's highest priorities.
"As of today, no country has the ability to conduct attacks from space. We must become the first nation in the world to possess this capability," Katz said.
Potential missions include satellite interception and space defense
Israel has not disclosed technical specifications or a development timeline for the proposed system.
Analysts believe a space-based laser could eventually be used to target hostile satellites, intercept incoming threats, conduct anti-satellite (ASAT) missions, or remove orbital debris.
Iron Beam could provide the technological foundation
Israel's ground-based Iron Beam directed-energy air defense system is widely considered the most likely technological foundation for a future orbital laser weapon.
Reports indicate that Rafael and Elbit Systems are exploring methods to adapt existing laser technologies for operation in space.
Israel has also been linked to airborne laser weapon development for fighter aircraft, while its Arrow 3 missile defense system has been speculated to possess limited anti-satellite capabilities.
Space-based military competition continues to intensify
Although Katz stated that no country currently possesses an operational space attack capability, several major powers continue advancing military space technologies.
China has reportedly continued research into directed-energy weapons and concepts for orbital laser systems capable of engaging satellites.
Russia has also long been associated with reports of developing space-based systems intended to disrupt large satellite constellations through high-energy pulses rather than direct kinetic attacks.
