Yedu “School”Blends Reading and Education in Rural Sanzhi
Yedu Bookstore, located in the halfway up the hills of Sanzhi District, which is a unique space that combines a bookstore
with education. Children are not only coming here for readings, but also learn to live. Owner of the bookstore will
discover knowledge out of the text book together with the children, while also provide free tutorial class, becoming an
important support for education in rural areas.
The founder, Chen Mang, and store manager, Chang Chun-chang, observed the lack of educational resources in Sanzhi.
They therefore transformed the bookstore into a learning space, where children develop reading habits and independent
thinking through selecting books, writing book reviews, and participating in the operation of the store. Books are no
longer just textbooks, but a medium for understanding the world.
To attract family coming from another district, apart from the daily learning route, the bookstore also holds different
talks and workshop, forming a cultural exchange platform step by step.
Yedu Bookstore demonstrates through action that education does not exist only in classrooms, but can also take place
in everyday life. It is not just a bookstore, but also a “school” that accompanies children’s growth and connects the
community with the wider world.
