Three U.S. Defense Firms Unveil Leonidas AGV
Directed-Energy and Autonomy Target Drone Swarm Threats

Three U.S. defense technology companies—Epirus, General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), and Kodiak AI—have jointly unveiled the Leonidas Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV), designed to counter the growing threat of drone swarm attacks with a next-generation solution.

Commercial Truck Platform Integrates Autonomy and Microwave Weapon

The Leonidas AGV is built on a Ford F-600 commercial truck platform, equipped with Kodiak AI’s autonomous driving software and Epirus’ Leonidas high-power microwave system, with GDLS responsible for overall integration—creating a highly mobile counter-drone platform.

Cost-Effective Solution for Military and Critical Infrastructure Defense

Compared to traditional interception systems, the Leonidas AGV offers significant cost advantages. It can be deployed not only for military base defense but also for protecting airports, rail hubs, and other critical infrastructure, aligning with requirements outlined by the Joint Interagency Task Force-South (JIATF-401).

Executive: New Defense Thinking Needed as Directed Energy Gains Importance

Epirus CEO Joe Lonsdale stated that traditional defense approaches are insufficient against drone swarms, calling for a fundamentally new defensive mindset. He emphasized that combining autonomous mobility with directed-energy weapons will be a defining trend in future warfare.

System Advancing but Still in Prototype Testing Phase

Epirus noted that the first-generation Leonidas system was deployed during last year’s U.S.-Philippines Balikatan exercise, while the second generation completed testing in February. However, GDLS stated that the Leonidas AGV remains in the prototype stage and has yet to undergo live counter-drone testing in full autonomous mode.

Autonomy Expands into Military Platforms Including JLTV

Kodiak AI has also partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps to integrate its autonomous system into the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), supporting platforms associated with the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires (ROGUE-Fires), highlighting the rapid militarization of autonomous technologies.
