Taiwan’s Drone Ambitions Take Flight in Chiayi: Premier Pledges National Team and Global Impact
“Taiwan’s progress cannot move forward without the power of Chiayi,” Premier Cho Jung-tai declared with conviction during a hometown gathering in New Taipei.
At the core of this initiative is Taiwan’s growing investment in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a sector now formally integrated into President Lai Ching-te’s “Five Trustworthy Industries” strategy. With the global drone supply chain currently dominated by the U.S. and China, Cho believes Taiwan is poised to become the world’s trusted “non-red” alternative.
The government’s goal is to establish dual innovation engines—matching the power of northern Taiwan’s “Hsinchu-Miaoli Silicon Valley” with a new southern counterpart. UAVs, alongside ICT, semiconductors, and biotech, are seen as pillars of this emerging cluster.
To scale up capacity, a second site is in the works—at Tatung Institute of Technology’s Taibao Campus. This expansion effort involves a cross-sector coalition, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Chiayi County Government, National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and more.
Premier Cho underlined that defense autonomy and industrial transformation are intertwined. The development of the drone industry is not just about technological advancement, but also about Taiwan’s strategic resilience in a world of increasingly polarized supply chains.
“Let us send a clear signal to the world that Taiwan shines not only in semiconductors, but now in UAVs as well,” he concluded. “And let that pride be rooted in Chiayi.”
