The First Wave – Online Support! Taiwanese People Stand Up for Rural Village with Night Vigil on Kategalan Blvd
With the purpose of developing Central Taiwan Science Park, local government officials forcibly entered farmers rice fields, purposefully ruining the crops.
This has highlighted the government’s abuse of administrative powers in expropriation issues. Currently in Taiwan, many areas of high quality farmland are falling into the hands of industrial developers, who are speculating and acquiring previously forbidden land through savage expropriation acts, infringing on the local peoples human rights as well as their rights of ownership – an unprecedented crisis in the development of agricultural land in Taiwan.
Through the internet-medium, citizen journalists have set in motion a ‘Stand Up for the Village’ initiative, and hope that through ‘facebook’, they can make known Taiwanese peoples’ support for farming communities.
