Shen Kuang-Wen pavilion inaugurated

In a bid to evade capture in the Qing Dynasty, scholar Shen Kuang-Wen traveled far and wide, eventually finding his way to Shanhua District in Taiwan, where he began teaching the local indigenous Pingpu people. As a way of celebrating the 400th anniversary of the legendary Shen Kuang-Wen, in the past few days a commemorative pavilion has been inaugurated in the plaza outside Shanhua Railway Station. Shen Kuang-Wen was in Taiwan more than a decade, mainly teaching and giving medical treatments, but also expanded into Taiwanese Literature and Education. He was widely known for his loving kindness, a quality that greatly touched the hearts of the people. The pavilion is not only to commemorate this great man, but to also share the story of Shen Kuang-Wen with today’s generation. On the day of the event, a carnival atmosphere consisting of school students drumming, local artists dressed in period clothing and poetry recitals from local children created an incredibly memorable day, ensuring the story of Shen Kuang-Wen will never be forgotten by the local Taiwanese people.

明末清初的文人沈光文，為了躲避清朝的追緝，輾轉來到台灣善化地區，並在當地開館授徒，教育當地的平埔族，為了感恩沈光文四百年冥誕，在善化火車站前設立紀念亭，並在近日揭牌落成。沈光文來台十多年，教學行醫，寬愛的心感動了當地居民，更拓展台灣文學與教育，在善化除了紀念碑之外，這次更以紀念亭來讓更多後世知道他的故事。活動當天，除了有國小同學擊鼓慶賀外，更請到當地藝術家以服裝展現文學氣息，也有小朋友朗誦沈光文詩詞，來紀念來台為民教育的沈光文先生。
