One Flag, Many Memories: Stories of War and Peace in Longgang

In Taoyuan’s Longgang district, two men—Chang Lao-wang, owner of the “Flag House” rice-noodle shop, and Wang Gen-shen, founder of the “Lost Army Story House”—share the same memories of war through different paths.

Born in Yunnan, Chang endured displacement and loss as a child. The trauma of war shaped his lifelong wish to keep the national flag flying. Over the years, he has hung thousands of flags at his own expense, turning his humble shop into a “Flag House,” a living tribute to his homeland and family.

Wang, after years traveling along the China–Myanmar border, came to understand the true cost of conflict. He founded the Lost Army Story House to preserve the history of the exiled soldiers and refugees, filling its rooms not with tales of glory, but with the pain of loss and longing.

Through their work, both men remind us that war is not a legend of heroes, but a story of broken bonds and families torn apart. Together, the Flag House and the Lost Army Story House have become powerful symbols in Longgang—a quiet call to remember, and to guard the peace we have today.

在桃園龍岡，「國旗屋」米干店老闆張老旺與「異域故事館」創辦人王根深，以不同方式訴說同樣的戰爭記憶。張老旺出生雲南，童年歷經逃難與喪親，戰火的創傷讓他立志讓國旗長久飄揚。多年來，他自費懸掛萬面國旗，將米干店化為「國旗屋」，藉此寄託對故鄉與親人的思念。王根深則因長期行走滇緬邊境，深知戰爭的殘酷，創立「異域故事館」保存孤軍與流亡者的歷史。館內展品記錄的不是榮耀，而是失落與傷痛。
