U.S. Marine Corps launches its first Attack Drone Team to integrate FPV drones into frontline units
The formation of MCADT marks a pivotal step for the U.S. Marine Corps as it moves to counter the rising threat of low-cost, highly lethal small drones witnessed in recent conflicts such as Ukraine and Gaza.
The unit was stood up under the supervision of Training Command and the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab. The establishment ceremony was attended by senior leadership, underscoring the strategic importance of drone warfare integration.
MCADT aims to rapidly enhance Marine units' ability to deploy and counter FPV drones, which have proven devastating on the modern battlefield. These drones are not just surveillance tools—they are precision-guided munitions in the hands of infantry squads.
Some of the drones tested have strike ranges up to 20 kilometers, with a unit cost under $5,000—making them both cost-effective and combat-effective. These platforms are designed to be fielded directly by squad and platoon-level teams, fundamentally shifting small unit tactics.
According to Maj. Tavishon, the MCADT will serve as a hub for developing FPV drone tactics, training standards, and operational doctrines. The team is also collaborating with marksmanship instructors and innovation labs to fuse combat simulation with competitive drone racing lessons learned.
By institutionalizing drone warfare at the team level, the Marine Corps hopes to dominate future battlespaces—leveraging agile, low-cost strike assets that enhance lethality without overburdening logistics.
