Typhoon Saola storms into MeiliWan Resort

On 2nd August Typhoon Sula passed Northern Taiwan. Before sunrise, at around 4.30 in the early morning, from the seashore of the Citong in Taitung the sky displayed a treacherous looking red. There was no rain, but a foehn wind was stirring – a warm dry wind – and massive waves relentlessly pounded the shore. It left one with a very weird feeling. The high tide was at 5am, and was 1meter higher than the normal high tide – the question on everyone’s lips was what impact would this meter disparity bring? The result was the waves advanced into the MeiliWan Resort covering the artificial pool on the beach edge with flotsam and jetsam. At the very same location before the swimming pool was constructed in April 2011 the area was similarly covered in sea debris. Since the hotel’s construction, each year typhoons have brought waves that breach the resorts boundary. The designers of MeiliWan Resort negligently ignored the warnings of the 2009 Typhoon Morakot, who in April 2011, after the completion of the first phase of the hotel building, continued to construct an artificial swimming pool on the beach. The problem being, the chosen location of the swimming pool was in the sea! This time the artistic designs in MeiliWan Resort have been thrown into the sea, what about next time? One must ask the question, is the company behind MeiliWan Resort or Taitung County Government - who jointly holds the positions of both MeiliWan Resort project partner and the government’s supervising unit - aware of the situation? Or do they plan to continue ignoring nature’s warnings?

蘇拉颱風過境北台灣，8月2日是農曆六月十五日，清晨四點半的台東刺桐海邊，破曉前的天色紅的詭譎，沒下雨，卻颳起了焚風，乾熱的空氣，配合著大浪拍岸 聲，有種說不出的詭異。清晨五點是滿潮點，潮差達1公尺，也就是說，海水將比平常高1公尺，這一公尺會帶來什麼影響呢？這一公尺，讓海浪帶著海漂物挺進美 麗灣渡假村蓋在沙灘上的人工游泳池邊緣，沿著牆角堆積了大量的漂流物質，同樣一處沙灘，在2011年4月未蓋游泳池之前、還只有飯店建築的時候，在過去幾 年的颱風經歷中，浪都是毫不客氣地打進建築物裡。美麗灣渡假村的建築設計，無視2009年八八風災大自然的示警，第一期飯店建築完成後，繼續在2011年 四月份在沙灘上建造人工游泳池，但游泳池的所在位置完全位於海水走過的地方。這一次是美麗灣渡假村的裝置藝術被海水沖走，下一次呢？美麗灣渡假村業者，以 及身兼開發夥伴與監督機關兩種矛盾角色的台東縣政府，看到了嗎？還要繼續對自然界的警告視而不見嗎？
