ST Engineering officially opened its new commercial aerospace airframe maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Changi Creek, within Singapore’s Changi Airport, on October 9, 2026. The company’s fourth airframe MRO site in Singapore will expand its service capacity and strengthen its global maintenance network as airlines expand their fleets and keep aircraft in service longer. Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry (Trade), Gan Kim Yong, attended the opening ceremony.

Four Widebody Bays to Add Capacity for Around 100 Aircraft Annually

The new facility covers approximately 84,000 square meters and features four widebody aircraft maintenance bays. Once fully operational, it is expected to increase ST Engineering’s widebody airframe MRO capacity in Singapore by 40%, potentially enabling the company to service around 100 additional widebody aircraft annually. The added capacity will provide airlines with greater scheduling flexibility and more reliable access to maintenance slots.

Digital Technologies, Robotics and AI to Improve Maintenance Efficiency

Designed for next-generation airframe maintenance, the facility integrates digitalisation, automation and artificial intelligence (AI). Digital planning systems, automated storage and retrieval solutions, robotics and electronic documentation rooms provide greater visibility throughout the maintenance lifecycle, streamlining workflows and supporting data-driven operations and decision-making.

Drones will conduct general visual inspections to improve speed and precision, while autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) will transport aircraft parts directly from storage areas to maintenance bays. These systems are designed to improve parts handling and reduce manual labour. Real-time maintenance dashboards will also provide up-to-date operational information, helping managers assess conditions and make decisions more quickly.

AI-enabled aircraft inspection and defect identification capabilities will further support maintenance quality, reduce aircraft turnaround time, and strengthen operational safety and reliability. The facility also incorporates sustainability measures, including on-site solar power generation and rainwater harvesting.

More Than 500 Jobs Planned as Facility Develops Digital MRO Skills

ST Engineering expects the facility to employ more than 500 people once operations are fully ramped up. To support increasingly digital and automated maintenance processes, the company will provide training and upskilling programmes in digital technologies and AI-enabled workflows, helping employees combine their existing technical expertise with emerging tools.

Kevin Chow, President of Commercial Aerospace at ST Engineering, said that as airline fleets grow and aircraft remain in service longer, operators need dependable maintenance capacity, reliable performance and consistently high standards. The new facility is designed to address these requirements while strengthening Singapore’s position as a global aviation hub and supporting the development of advanced aerospace capabilities and skilled jobs.

Cindy Koh, Executive Vice President at the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), said the facility’s robotics, digital and AI capabilities would enable more connected, automated and sustainable maintenance operations. These technologies are also expected to create opportunities for Singaporeans to develop new skills, work with advanced aerospace technologies and pursue careers in the aviation sector.

Expanding Across Asia-Pacific and North America

Beyond Singapore, ST Engineering’s airframe MRO network in the Asia-Pacific region includes facilities in Guangzhou and Ezhou, China. A second hangar in Ezhou is expected to become operational in the second half of 2027, while two new hangars in Pensacola, Florida, are scheduled to enter service progressively from early 2027. These additions will further expand the Group’s global maintenance capacity.

With the Singapore facility opening and additional hangars planned in China and the United States, ST Engineering is expanding its widebody maintenance capabilities through a broader international network and technology-enabled operations. As global aviation and fleet maintenance requirements continue to evolve, capacity expansion, digital management and workforce development are set to remain important priorities for its commercial aerospace MRO business.
