Taiwan's Senior Dragon Boat Team Defies Age
Age has never been a barrier to chasing dreams. At the Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships, a
team called the “Silver Wind Dragon Boat Team”, whose members have an average age of over 70. While
others competing against teams made up mostly of much younger paddlers, these seniors continue to
paddle with their passion. Stroke by stroke, they are writing an inspiring new chapter of their lives on the
KeelungRiver.
Some of the paddlers were once individual athletes who discovered a new sense of purpose and enjoyment
through team competition. One member calls "youngest sister," bringing energy and laughter to every
practice.Others say dragon boat racing is the perfect combination of endurance and strength training, and
believe themore they paddle, the younger they feel. For them, competing is not just about winning races, it is
aboutgaining better health and new goals in life.
These paddlers in their 70s and beyond are challenging society's stereotypes about aging. They prove that it
is never too late to stay active, push their limits, and embrace new challenges. Their journey also inspires
hopes of seeing them compete on even bigger international stages, such as the World Masters Games, and
continue writing an extraordinary story for the older generation.
