The 2026 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) were officially announced this week (May 6–7) during the 6th Hanseatic League of Universities (HLU) Annual Conference and Global Ranking Awards Ceremony, proudly hosted by National Chi Nan University (NCNU). This year, a total of 1,927 universities from 96 countries participated, with a record-breaking 13,211 innovation cases submitted for rigorous evaluation. NCNU’s global overall ranking leaped to 69th place, a significant jump of 30 positions from its 99th place ranking in 2025. This represents one of the most remarkable advancements in international rankings for a Taiwanese higher education institution in recent years. Furthermore, this marks the first time a Taiwanese institution has hosted this prestigious global summit on university innovation, adding historical significance to the achievement.

Unlike traditional rankings that focus heavily on the volume of research papers, the WURI rankings emphasize assessing the "Real Impact" of a university’s innovative practices. In 2026, WURI expanded from 16 categories to 24 thematic categories, introducing a third axis, "What to Innovate," to provide a comprehensive evaluation across four major domains: Research, Education, Service, and Commercialization.

NCNU had eight innovation projects ranked among the global top 50 this year. The most outstanding achievement was project B3, "Smart Campus AI Transformation and Governance Plan," which ranked 5th in the world. By implementing generative AI, institutional data analytics, and AI dialogue tools, the project saves NCNU’s 7,000 students over NT$32 million in commercial software licensing fees annually, achieving a high cost-benefit ratio of 91.13:1.

Other award-winning projects include:
• C3 "Net-Zero Transition and Smart Innovation Interdisciplinary Program": Ranked 11th (utilizing Nantou County as a "Living Lab" for cross-disciplinary talent cultivation).
• B8 "Brand Building Project Towards a World-Class Sustainable University": Ranked 20th.
• A5 "Resilient Campus Disaster Prevention and Net-Zero Transition Plan": Ranked 24th (implementing Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and diverse green energy systems to establish NCNU as a regional support center for Nantou during disasters).
• C8 "Educational Innovation Category": Ranked 36th.
• B5 "University Fund Sustainability Project": Ranked 37th (with available funds growing from NT$351 million to NT$471 million).

NCNU President Dong-Sing Wuu stated that this jump in rankings and the recognition of eight projects in the world’s top 50 are not only the result of the collective efforts of NCNU’s faculty and students but also signify NCNU’s steady evolution from a regional university to a globally influential innovative institution. In the face of higher education transformation and the wave of sustainability, NCNU will continue to use "smart governance" as its oar and "sustainability and resilience" as its sail to navigate new paths for Taiwanese universities on the global map of higher education.

He emphasized that NCNU aims not only to be a "university seen by the world" but also a "university that provides solutions for the world," ensuring that the innovative energy from Taiwan's mountain city continues to shine globally.
