Leaping to 30th in the World: NCNU Stands Out Among 1,745 Universities, Marking a Milestone in Taiwan's Sustainable Education
The global sustainable education community’s annual highlight, the "2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Results and Roundtable," took place grandly from December 4th to 6th at National Chi Nan University (NCNU). This year saw the largest scale in history, with 1,745 universities from 105 countries submitting data for evaluation. NCNU distinguished itself with exceptional performance, ranking 30th worldwide amidst fierce global competition. The university has remained in the global top 50 for nine consecutive years and has strongly advanced into the top 30 in recent years, demonstrating Taiwan's profound strength and international leadership in green campus governance.
National Chi Nan University has once again secured the 30th position in the global GreenMetric rankings, driven by solid infrastructure management, innovative energy transition strategies, and a university-wide sustainability curriculum system.
Notably, this global ranking release event hosted by National Chi Nan University attracted 120 university leaders from 70 universities across 16 countries. This marks the first time in the history of Taiwan's higher education that an international press conference for world university rankings has been hosted in the country, symbolizing that Taiwan's soft power in sustainable education has received high recognition on the global stage.

Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming delivered a keynote speech at the forum, announcing 2025 as the "Year of Carbon Pricing." He declared the launch of a dual-track system starting with carbon fees followed by carbon trading, alongside a trial of the "Taiwanese CBAM" (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism). He reiterated the 2050 Net-Zero pathway and emphasized working hand-in-hand with universities to cultivate "green-collar" talent. Facing COP30, Taiwan has also established a situation room to align with international standards, demonstrating Taiwan's determination to be a force for good in the world.

NCNU President Wu Tung-hsing stated that hosting the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings release is not only an honor for NCNU but also a significant milestone for Taiwan's higher education, symbolizing international recognition of the country's green governance model. He pointed out that the core spirit of the annual conference is "Local Practice, Global Action." By inviting global university leaders to Nantou, the goal is to show the world that Taiwan's universities produce not only high-quality academic results but also respond to real-world climate challenges with practical actions, presenting a sustainability experience unique to Taiwan.

The event featured a special roundtable forum on "Integrating SDGs into Curriculum and University Governance." Professor Hu Jin-li of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University presented a specialized report analyzing the staged achievements of Taiwanese universities in implementing SDGs, while deeply analyzing the dependencies and risks Taiwan faces regarding energy, economy, and climate. He emphasized the critical bridge role universities play between the public and private sectors. Following this, President Wu of NCNU joined presidents and representatives from Universitas Nasional (Indonesia), Siam University (Thailand), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the University of São Paulo (Brazil), and the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (Germany) for a deep dialogue. They exchanged diverse perspectives on themes ranging from cross-cultural comparisons and implementation challenges to teaching and governance practices, showcasing the substantive energy of higher education in driving sustainability.
