Xavier Brunson, commander of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), emphasized the importance of viewing the Indo-Pacific region from an adversary’s perspective to reassess U.S. military deployments. He highlighted South Korea’s strategic position within the “first island chain” and its robust military capabilities as vital to U.S. interests in the region.

Brunson expressed concerns over North Korea’s deepening military cooperation with Russia, including exchanges of troops and ammunition for advanced missile, satellite, submarine, and drone technologies. This collaboration could enhance North Korea’s nuclear program, posing increased threats to regional stability.

As the head of the United Nations Command, Brunson noted potential changes in the composition and posture of the 18-nation force to address evolving challenges. He mentioned New Zealand’s recent deployment to the Korean Peninsula as an example of growing international engagement.

Regarding the deployment of Patriot missile systems, Brunson acknowledged that some units had been redirected to the Middle East, with no clear timeline for their return. However, he assured that the Indo-Pacific Command had ensured alternative capabilities were in place to meet defense requirements.

Brunson also addressed China’s activities in the West Sea, including the construction of structures and increased presence of Chinese fishing and naval vessels near the Northern Limit Line, which have raised concerns in South Korea. Looking ahead to South Korea’s presidential election in June, Brunson stressed that regardless of the outcome, the new leader would need to confront the combined threats posed by North Korea, China, and Russia, underscoring the importance of strengthened trilateral cooperation among the U.S., South Korea, and Japan.
