Northrop Tests GPS-Free Navigation Tech for Hypersonic Vehicles

 

On May 9, 2025, Northrop Grumman announced the successful testing of its advanced Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) technology, enabling hypersonic vehicles to navigate without relying on the Global Positioning System (GPS).

 

The IMU system was tested aboard Stratolaunch’s Talon-A hypersonic glide vehicles during two flights in December 2024 and March 2025. These vehicles, capable of speeds exceeding Mach 5, demonstrated that the IMU could accurately calculate flight paths under extreme conditions, showcasing its reliability in high-dynamic environments.

 

Derived from Northrop’s space navigation systems, the IMU has been miniaturized and ruggedized to withstand the harsh conditions of hypersonic flight. This advancement represents a significant step forward in autonomous navigation capabilities for hypersonic weapons and aircraft, particularly in GPS-denied environments.
