As drone swarms become a defining threat in modern warfare, the U.S. Army is turning to 3D printing to produce ultra-low-cost UAVs for frontline training—replicating hostile aerial threats at scale without breaking the bank.
Dubbed the “Sprinting Program,” the initiative is spearheaded by Army Futures Command and supported by the 101st Airborne Division and Army Materiel Command. Its primary goal? To expose troops to swarm drone attacks as part of routine garrison-level live-fire training.
“We can’t wait until we’re in combat to learn how to respond to drone swarms,” said Gen. James Rainey, commander of Army Futures Command. “These training drones need to be ridiculously cheap. No Gucci cameras. No fancy sensors. Just get them airborne and knock them down.”
This concept draws directly from battlefield lessons in Ukraine and Myanmar, where both forces have relied on 3D-printed drones to overwhelm opponents at a fraction of the cost.
Each week, about 10 small drones (under 9 kg) roll off the line. The Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois handles the 3D-printed airframes, while Tobyhanna Army Depot in Pennsylvania installs the electronics—highlighting a collaborative logistics network designed for scale.
If the Army chooses to scale up, production may shift to injection molding—boosting output to 10,000 units per month. These would primarily be deployed to major training hubs like the National Training Center and the Joint Readiness Training Center.
This quiet technological shift is redefining U.S. military preparedness—fusing cost-efficiency with battlefield realism in the age of drone swarms.
