As drones increasingly dominate modern warfare, the UK military is stepping up its counter-drone game. The Ministry of Defence recently announced that it has successfully tested its Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW), marking the first time the system intercepted a swarm of drones—proving its effectiveness against mass drone assaults.

這場測試選在西威爾斯地區的馬諾比爾防空靶場進行,是英國軍史上最大規模的反無人機演練。RFDEW不僅首次面對無人機群,更在單次交戰中擊落兩波蜂群,總計超過百架無人機,成績驚艷。

Conducted at the Manorbier Air Defence Range in West Wales, this test represented the UK's largest-ever live counter-drone exercise. RFDEW successfully neutralized over 100 drone targets and even managed to take down two separate swarms in a single engagement—demonstrating its real-world combat potential.

RFDEW的關鍵技術在於其高頻無線電波,可直接破壞目標的電子元件。這不僅能擊落傳統無人機,也能對抗抗干擾能力強的目標。更重要的是,它每次發射的成本僅0.1英鎊,約新台幣4.3元,堪稱極致性價比。

The system relies on high-frequency radio waves to disrupt or destroy the electronic circuits of its targets. This makes it effective not only against standard drones but also those resistant to traditional jamming. And with each shot costing just £0.10—about NT$4.30—it offers a compelling low-cost solution to high-volume threats.

這項新武器也整合了光電與雷達偵測技術,可自動偵測來襲無人機、進行定位並主動接戰。其模組化設計還能搭載於現有軍用卡車,提供快速機動能力,在部分任務上甚至可取代傳統短程防空系統。

Equipped with electro-optical and radar sensors, RFDEW can autonomously detect, track, and engage incoming drones. Its modular design allows it to be mounted on existing military trucks, enabling rapid deployment and even replacing traditional short-range air defense systems in specific roles.

英國國防部表示,首套RFDEW系統預計將在2027年正式服役,屆時可望成為前線防空的新利器。隨著無人機威脅升高,這類創新武器系統無疑將成為未來戰場的關鍵。

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the first operational RFDEW units are expected to enter service by 2027. With the increasing threat of drone warfare, systems like this will likely play a pivotal role in shaping the future of battlefield defense.
