A Basin of Water, Hearts United Across East and West—Discovering the Meaning of Love and Service Through Washing the Feet of Parents and Teachers
Reflections on the 2026 Taiwan Filial Piety Gathering: “Filial Piety Comes First Among All Virtues”—Honoring Parents and Teachers Through Foot Washing

Taking part in this gathering stirred many thoughts within me. A basin of clean water, a towel, and the simple act of bending down may seem ordinary, yet they invite us to reflect anew: What does it mean to honor our parents? What is respect? And what is true love?
When we gently hold our parents’ feet, we remember the years they have spent working and caring for the family. When we wash our teachers’ feet, we thank them for guiding us along part of life’s journey. Those feet that once hurried tirelessly for our sake now deserve our time and tender care.
This reminds me of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, as well as the teachings in ancient Chinese texts about caring for one’s parents. In a basin of clean water, these two distinct traditions reveal values that can speak to and resonate with one another.
Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet: Living Out Love Through Service
Chapter 13 of the Gospel of John records that Jesus rose, wrapped a towel around His waist, poured water into a basin, and washed and dried His disciples’ feet. As their Teacher and Lord, He personally set an example of service, teaching them to wash one another’s feet and to love one another.
I feel deeply that a teacher’s greatness lies not only in sharing knowledge, but also in putting those teachings into practice. By bending down to wash His disciples’ feet, Jesus made love visible and tangible. His example also reminds us that those in positions of leadership should take responsibility for caring for others.
From this perspective, I am reminded of Laozi’s words: “The highest goodness is like water. Water benefits all things without competing.” Water nourishes life, flows toward low places, and provides what living things need.
I see “the highest goodness is like water” as a way to understand the spirit of service expressed through foot washing. This is a reflection across cultures: when we humble ourselves and care attentively for another person, kindness flows like water into both our hearts.
Filial Piety in Ancient Chinese Texts: Beginning with Everyday Care
Do ancient Chinese texts contain references to washing parents’ feet? Yes—there is a clear and relevant passage.
The “Domestic Regulations” chapter of the Book of Rites states, in its guidance on caring for parents and parents-in-law: “When their feet are dirty, prepare warm water and invite them to wash.” This passage shows that attending to elders’ foot hygiene was already part of family care in ancient China. It describes everyday care for parents and should not be equated directly with today’s public foot-washing gatherings.
This passage offers me a profound insight: honoring our parents can take shape in the smallest details of everyday life.
Are our parents cold or tired? Is walking becoming difficult for them? Is someone willing to listen to what they have to say? By attending to these needs, we can turn filial devotion from words of goodwill into daily companionship.
When we were young, our parents bathed and dressed us and held our hands as we learned to walk. As they grow older, we too should learn to slow down and walk beside them. A basin of warm water carries both our remembrance of their care and our loving response to it.
Honoring Parents and Teachers: Putting Gratitude into Action
Our parents nurture our lives; our teachers awaken our understanding. Honoring both reminds us to cherish those who have helped us become who we are.
Washing a teacher’s feet can express a student’s gratitude for that teacher’s guidance. Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, in turn, offers an example of a teacher taking the initiative to serve students. Together, these acts deepen the bond between teacher and student. When students are grateful and teachers give generously, education flourishes through mutual care.
As an educator, I also remind myself that receiving students’ respect brings a responsibility to be worthy of their trust—to pass on what I have learned and to express care through action.
Where Eastern and Western Values Meet: From Gratitude to Mutual Love
Christianity originated in Western Asia and later profoundly influenced Western culture, while Chinese filial traditions have been passed down through East Asian cultures for generations. Each has its own background and meaning, yet this gathering offers a beautiful opportunity for dialogue between them.
The Chinese tradition of caring for parents reminds us to remember our roots, look after our parents, and thank our teachers. Jesus’ example of washing feet reminds us to take the initiative in serving others and to learn to love one another.
In my understanding, bringing these values together can broaden the reach of gratitude: from caring for our own parents to reaching out to lonely elders; from thanking our own teachers to respecting educators who serve quietly; and from cherishing our own families to caring for people around us who need help.
Honoring parents gives love its roots. Respecting teachers carries wisdom forward. Service extends care to more people.

I hope the inspiration awakened by this gathering will reach every home: one more caring greeting, a little more patience, and more time together. May we lend a hand when our parents need us, remember to thank our teachers for their dedication, and willingly serve others in times of difficulty.
May every expression of devotion also respect the wishes and feelings of those receiving it, so that our elders and teachers can experience our sincerity in comfort and dignity.
A basin of water can wash the dust from our feet; a sincere heart can bring people closer together.

May each of us have a heart whose goodness is like water. May gratitude take root in our actions, and may peace begin with the care we show one another.
