Designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare Missions
U.S.-based maritime autonomy company Saildrone unveiled its “Spectre” high-speed unmanned surface vessel (USV) series on the 21st, featuring two variants—Silent Endurance and Stealth Strike—tailored for anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
Dual Configurations for ISR and Strike Roles
According to Defense News, the Spectre series debuted at the Sea-Air-Space Symposium. The vessels measure about 52 meters in length with a displacement of 250 tons, and can be configured with wind, solar, or diesel propulsion, reaching speeds up to 30 knots (55 km/h).
The Silent Endurance variant features a solar sail design and sonar arrays, offering low acoustic signatures ideal for persistent ASW surveillance.
The Stealth Strike variant incorporates containerized launch systems, enabling mobile strike missions and enhancing maritime deterrence.
Addressing ASW Gaps with Industry Collaboration
CEO Richard Jenkins stated that the Spectre series is designed to address critical gaps in ASW capabilities, with ongoing collaboration with Lockheed Martin to refine system performance.
Prototype Testing Completed, Sea Trials Planned for 2027
Reports indicate that scaled prototypes have already been tested in Danish waters, validating performance across varying sea conditions.
Full-scale prototypes will be built by Fincantieri at its Wisconsin shipyard, with sea trials expected in early 2027, targeting adoption by the U.S. Navy and international customers.
