Saved indigo dyeing culture of Sanxia goes from strength to strength

Sanxia Old Street, formally known as Sanjiaoyong, was an important center of textile dyeing in Northern Taiwan during the late Qing dynasty and Japanese occupation period when dyeing workshops lined the streets. The indigo dyeing process was brought to Taiwan by early immigrants from mainland China but changes over time and the rise of chemical dyes inflicted heavy damage on the sustainable development of the indigo dyeing industry in Taiwan, and it all but disappeared for about sixty years. Today, however, a renaissance in Sanxia’s indigo dying is taking place.

Fortunately, the indigo- dyeing culture has remained alive to the present day and become an artistic feature of Sanxia Old Street. Today, many people visit CAN Culture, Art and Nature to taste the unique experience of producing natural indigo clothes. The culture of indigo dying has not declined due to the rise of fast fashion, and now, on the contrary, stands unshakable and as vibrant as ever.

台灣三峽老街特色藍染文化 保存至今重現生命力

早在清朝末年跟日據時期，三峽老街還叫做三角湧街，是北台灣最重要的染布業中心，染坊的牌樓立面處處林立，是由先民從中國大陸來台時引進了藍染這項產業技術，但隨著時代演變，化學染料的興起，重創藍染產業的永續發展，消失了約有六十年的時間，而至今三峽老街藍染文化又重新燃起。

藍染文化流傳至今，成為三峽老街的一項藝術特色，許多民眾依然前來甘樂文創體驗DIY製作天然又獨一無二的衣服，藍染文化不受快時尚興起而沒落，依然屹立不搖，保存至今重現生命力。
