Yunlin’s Kouhu Crematorium Issue

With an estimated 3000 people taking part in the May 1 demonstration in Kouhu Township, Yunlin County, the event was the largest of its kind ever seen in the area. Kouhu Anti-Crematorium Self-Help Group (口湖鄉拒設火葬場自救會) set up a Facebook page in April, and in less than a month, had already attracted the attention of over 10,000 people from the internet community; documentary filmmaker Lee Mongzhe (李孟哲) also got involved, helping to shoot a short film publicizing the group’s cause and calling on Kouhu residents to make a stand.

The self-help group’s careful assigning of various work duties has allowed local residents and people living further afield to work together; it is hoped that in the future the self-help group can transition into a group focusing on issues of concern throughout the local community and not be confined to the current crematorium issue. Though the May 1 demonstration attracted an enthusiastic response from locals, the local township office hasn’t made a definite promise not to continue with the project, and therefore, the self-help group is preparing for a protracted battle in the war against pollution.

雲林縣口湖鄉於5月1日出現首次大遊行，遊行全程聚集約三千名民眾，是口湖自治史上第一次大型抗議行動。口湖鄉拒設火葬場自救會於四月初在臉書上創立社團，不到一個月內吸引萬名網友關注，紀錄片導演李孟哲更拍攝宣傳片，呼籲口湖鄉民站出來。自救會分工仔細，在地鄉民與出外工作的遊子共同努力；未來更希望能夠轉型成關心地方議題的社團，不侷限在火葬場的議題上。雖然五月一日的遊行鄉民反應熱烈，但在鄉公所明確承諾不繼續推動以前，自救會打算長期經營，和可能到來的汙染打持久戰。
