Precious algal reefs of Taoyuan activities

Located on the coastline between the districts of Guanyin (觀音) and Xinwu (新屋), Taoyuan Algal Reef Wildlife Protection Zone was set up in 2014. The area formerly boasted 27 kilometers of algal reef shoreline, the greatest area of algal reef in the whole of Taiwan. Sadly, due to the impact of industrial pollution, today a mere 4.5 kilometers of the algal reef remains. 

In order to save Taoyuan’s algal reef from its current crisis, scholars and civic environmental protection organizations believe the area should be designated as a nature reserve with tightly restricted access. On April 25, an alliance of Taoyuan groups launched the 2015 Cherish Taoyuan Algal Reef Hiking Activity. This year’s activity, the fourth such gathering, attracted the participation of 1500 people voicing out to save the reef.

2015珍愛桃園藻礁知性健行活動

2014年劃定為野生動物保護區的桃園藻礁，是位於觀音至新屋的沿岸，曾經擁有27公里的藻礁海岸，面積是全台灣最大的，但因為工業污染的影響，導致目前僅存約4.5公里。

為讓珍貴的桃園藻礁早日脫離險境，專家學者以及民間保育團體，均認為應該將此區劃設為管制更嚴格的自然保留區。桃園在地聯盟於4月25日發起珍愛桃園藻礁健行活動，2015年已經是第四屆舉辦，活動現場聚集1500人齊為藻礁發聲。
